The design of PE34 was inspired by the concept of architectural hedonism, aiming to create different experiences and comfort for users throughout their workday. The tower boasts easy urban accessibility, bicycle parking, a square with fountains and relaxation areas, flexible and comfortable working spaces, bistro and gardens for breaks, ideal lighting and thermal comfort, a fitness center, and a rooftop bar for social gatherings.
The building's unique properties lie in its futuristic design, which evokes concepts of innovation and sustainability. The clean, elegant skin and glass facade open into vertical gardens on some levels, reducing energy consumption and creating a visually appealing aesthetic. The tower's overall volume engages in a dialogue with Rafael Moneo's "Puig Tower" located across the street, creating a visual balance between the two structures.
The realization of this design was achieved through a simple pillar system with a concrete core. The two-way slab, or Holedeck, is a system of voided concrete slabs that can be pierced by services and plumbing systems, reducing the necessary height of each floor and thus, the amount of materials required. This design also offers excellent acoustic performance, absorbing a wide range of the sound spectrum.
Located in Plaza Europa, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, the project was completed in 2017. The tower features 22 stories with a total height of 92.80 meters from street level and over 14,000 built square meters. The diagonal zigzag design in the facade accentuates the verticality of a curved smooth structure, creating a futuristic look that is both visually appealing and functional.
Underlying the design of PE34 is a strong focus on sustainability and respect for the natural environment. The project makes use of renewable energies, energy-efficient construction strategies, and lighting and conditioning solutions that reduce consumption to the maximum. The selection of responsible and local materials minimizes the amount of waste in the construction process, and the use of extra-stable solar control glass regulates temperature, saves energy, and reduces air conditioning consumption.
PE34's design was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019, a prestigious accolade granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. This award is a testament to the tower's unique design, which successfully balances innovation, sustainability, and elegance, setting a new standard for future architectural designs.
